Alienware's new 55-inch OLED monitor is a step closer to the perfect gaming TV

Dell is looking to outdo Nvidia's giant 4K gaming screens with an OLED panel on its latest Alienware monitor. The Alienware 55 OLED gaming monitor includes a 55-inch OLED display with a refresh rate of 120Hz and AMD FreeSync support that reduces visual artifacts such as tearing the screen. This Alienware panel features very thin edges and includes a single DisplayPort 1.2 port, three HDMI 2.0 ports, four USB ports, a headphone jack and SPDIF audio output.

The absence of HDMI 2.1 will disappoint a lot, hoping to take advantage of 4K video at 120Hz via HDMI. The rear mount is VESA compatible. So you can use this screen with the supplied footpegs or mount it on a wall or stand. The Dell Control Panel also has a response time of 0.5 milliseconds (gray to gray) and includes a remote control that, hopefully, works much better than the one included in the Omen X Big Format Gaming Display (BFGD) monitor. .

We've already seen similar 65-inch gaming screens from HP, Acer, and Asus, but none of them have included OLED panels. OLED is ideal for true blacks and color reproduction, but, unfortunately, Dell does not include HDR support on this Alienware display. This makes it less attractive as a main TV that you can use for games and 4K movies / TV shows, especially since more and more games are also supported by HDR support.

As the line between TVs and monitors continues to fade, we are still waiting for the perfect widescreen TV / monitor, which combines all the desired features for gaming and entertainment. Ideally, a 65-inch 4K OLED display with a refresh rate of 120Hz or higher, HDR10 + and Dolby Vision ports, HDMI 2.1 ports, DisplayPort 2.0 ports (once they are ready), and in charge of G-Sync and FreeSync.

Even if the perfect panel does not exist yet, it is likely that we will see many more OLED displays with refresh rates of 120Hz or higher and support technologies such as FreeSync in 2020. Microsoft and Sony significantly improve capabilities of their next generation. consoles, with plans to support ray tracing, games up to 8K, and the focus on improving raw frame rates to take advantage of 120Hz screens and more.
