The fourth generation of the iPad Pro launched in March 2020 with minor upgrades. Apple announced the device with a press release. The main changes were the LiDAR Scanner, first introduced in an Apple product, and the A12Z chip, a variant of the A12 series. The most exciting news was the introduction of the Magic Keyboard with a trackpad, which also works on the third generation iPad Pro (and now the fourth generation iPad Air).
For the 2021 iPad Pro update, we can expect some new features, although in January, the Macotakara supply chain outlet said this model would not have a newer design. . Rumors currently indicate that Apple will be hosting an event on March 23, and that could be the time when the new iPad Pro will be officially announced.
A14X chip, mini LED display and more with the new iPad Pro
Reports still suggest that the new iPad Pro will launch in the first quarter of 2021. According to DigiTimes, mini-LED technology will be the main change for the iPad lineup this year.
For now, all iPads have LCD screens, which require backlighting. With the introduction of the mini-LED, considerably smaller LEDs are used, allowing much greater control of the localized backlight, allowing for higher brightness and deeper blacks. The combination increases the contrast ratio and uses less energy.
The 12.9-inch iPad Pro will likely be Apple’s first product to feature mini-LED technology. Basically, only Apple Watch and iPhones use an OLED display. Other devices, including the iPad and MacBook, use an LCD screen. The introduction of mini-LED display technology on the fifth-generation iPad Pro will open up the possibility for more Apple products to adopt this feature, like the rumored 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro.
It’s important to note that for now, only the 12.9-inch iPad Pro model will receive mini-LED display technology, with the 11-inch model coming in the future. According to several reports and analysts, this new iPad Pro will have a chip based on the A14, the same processor available on the fourth generation iPad Air and on the iPhone 12 range.
It is not known whether the chip will be called A14X or A14Z, but it will perform better than the previous model.
The iPad Pro could also receive a smaller upgrade to its cameras, such as the Smart HDR 3 and Dolby Vision recording technology, introduced with the iPhone 12.
New Apple Pencil and launch date
Last week, a new Apple Pencil leak surfaced on the internet. With a shiny design, this could be a new accessory for the iPad Pro. While this Apple Pencil looks like the first generation model, we can’t see a Lightning port, so that could mean it’s for newer iPads.
Remember that the second generation Apple Pencil charges when connected to the iPad Pro model (third generation or newer) and the iPad Air (fourth generation at the moment).
The Magic Keyboard will likely stay the same, and there are no rumors pointing to a MagSafe accessory for the iPad line anytime soon.
If Apple launches the fifth-generation iPad Pro at an event on March 23, it could be available the following Friday, March 26. It is not known if Apple will give new colors to this iPad, new storage options or 5G capacity. The iPad Pro is currently available in silver and space gray, 128GB up to 1TB of storage and with an LTE connection.
