All-new Tesla Model S Plaid breaks down: report

One of the original Tesla Model S Plaid owners and several Tesla car users – C Wang (YouTube) – reports that his brand new car has broken down.

The car was delivered in late June and is under 100 miles – in fact 89 miles (143 km). According to the video, while driving, he displayed a message on the instrument cluster: “Stop safely, the vehicle stops, the electrical system is unable to support all functions. “

The driver reports that he had to stop in the middle of the road, the car was completely cut off and even the doors were not working – he had to open them manually.

The car was towed away and according to information received from Tesla, the service center ordered three parts on July 10:

  • High voltage battery for Model S Plaid
  • Driver airbag assembly
  • RWK gloss top trim

It looks like the high voltage battery needs to be replaced, but at this point we don’t know if this is a minor issue that stopped the main pack or something more serious. It could be a one-time, production-related issue, or a rare issue with the new battery that will need to be investigated and addressed by the manufacturer.

The car is expected to be ready on July 12 (today), but since the owner has taken his Tesla Model Y for a trip across the country, we likely won’t have any updates this week.

The owner said he prefers the Tesla Model Y for long-haul travel over the Plaid because it’s more efficient and faster because of it, although we need to see metrics to say anything about it. After all, the Plaid was loading pretty quickly.

Previous videos from June:

We don’t know if the potential battery issue has anything in common with the previous Tesla Model S Plaid fire report.

However, with less than 1,900 cars delivered in the second quarter of 2021, even a single report translates into a high share when it comes to automotive standards.
