There have been more than a dozen White House resignations since Wednesday, when hundreds of violent and pro-Trump rioters vandalized the chambers of Congress, threatened lawmakers and killed five.
Most resigning explicitly blamed their departure on the president’s refusal to accept his electoral defeat and urging a crowd to march to Capitol Hill during Wednesday’s raucous “Save America March”.
Those who left the ship just two weeks before the official handover on January 20 include two Cabinet members – Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao as well as former Cabinet member Mick Mulvaney.
Betsy DeVos
Education secretary
Previously a staunch Trump supporter, DeVos resigned Thursday, citing the “inadmissible” riot that caused widespread destruction on Capitol Hill a day earlier.
“There is no doubt about the impact of your rhetoric on the situation, and this is the inflection point for me,” DeVos told Trump in his resignation, obtained by the Wall Street Journal.

Transport secretary
Chao was the first cabinet member to step down, making his announcement hours before DeVos on Thursday.
She is the wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), A longtime Trump advocate who parted ways with the president over his refusal to accept electoral defeat.
“As I’m sure many of you do, this has deeply troubled me in a way that I just can’t put aside,” Chao said, announcing that she would be stepping down on the job. January 11.

United States Special Envoy to Northern Ireland
Mulvaney, a former White House chief of staff and director of the Bureau of Management and Budget, resigned his last post as envoy for Northern Ireland on Thursday.
“I called [Secretary of State] Mike Pompeo last night to let him know I was resigning from this. I can not do it. I can’t stay, ”Mulvaney told CNBC in an interview Thursday.
“Those who choose to stay, and I’ve spoken with some of them, choose to stay because they fear the president will put someone worse off,” Mulvaney said.

Deputy National Security Advisor
Matt Pottinger was among the very first to step down, Bloomberg News reported from his Wednesday afternoon announcement.
Pottinger blamed Trump’s incitement to protesters, sources told Bloomberg.
His boss, National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien, also considered leaving, but was persuaded to stay by allies, the press service reported.

Longtime press secretary and senior advisor to President Trump, Hicks will leave the White House the week before Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20.
Hicks, however, told her colleagues that she was already planning to step down and that her decision was unrelated to the riot that claimed the lives of five people, Bloomberg News reports.

Chief of Staff to First Lady Melania Trump
Grisham was also among the very first to resign, announcing his immediate departure on Wednesday.
Grisham started working for then-presidential candidate Donald Trump in 2015, then served as deputy White House press secretary under Sean Spicer before the first lady hired him to be on her staff in 2017.

Tyler goodspeed
Acting Chairman, White House Council of Economic Advisers
Goodspeed cited the Capitol Riots as resigning Thursday.
A senior adviser to the president, Goodspeed has left it to his chief of staff, Rachael Slobodien, to confirm his resignation.
“The events at the United States Capitol yesterday led Tyler to conclude that his position was untenable,” she said in a statement.

Elinore McCance-Katz
Assistant Secretary for Mental Health
McCance-Katz resigned Thursday evening, explaining that she could no longer continue to work for the Trump administration due to the “unacceptable” behavior of the rioters.
She called her decision “difficult” and did not explicitly mention Trump in her statement.
She said, however, “I cannot support language that incites violence and endangers our very existence”.

Assistant Under Secretary of Commerce for Intelligence and Security
Costello announced his resignation on Thursday via his Twitter account.
“Yesterday’s events were an unprecedented attack on the very heart of our democracy – instigated by a sitting president,” he said in the post. “The president has long despised and diminished the rule of law and the Constitution. Yesterday, this resulted in a violent sedition against the US Congress in an attempt to overturn a legally recognized and valid election.”

Russia advisor
Trump’s top White House adviser on Russia, Tully, tendered his resignation Thursday, Reuters reported.
He resigned following the storming of Capitol Hill on Wednesday by Trump supporters, a central administration source told the news service.

Members of the National Security Council
In addition to the above resignations, at least six National Security Council staff have resigned, according to DefenseNews.com.
“Among them, the Senior Director for Africa, Erin Walsh; the NSC Bureau Chief for Weapons of Mass Destruction Monitoring, Anthony Ruggiero; the Senior Adviser for Europe and Russia, Ryan Tully, and Mark Vandroff , the NSC’s senior director for defense policy. ” the point of sale reported.
Additionally, Rob Greenway, one of the president’s top Middle East advisers, was mulling over his own departure, the outlet said.

Matthews blamed his resignation on the Capitol Hill riot.
“I have been honored to serve in the Trump administration and proud of the policies we have adopted,” Matthews said in a statement.
“As someone who worked in the halls of Congress, I was deeply disturbed by what I saw today. I will step down from my role, effective immediately. Our nation needs a transfer of peaceful power, ”Matthews said, ABC reported.

Anna Cristina Niceta Lloyd
Social secretary
Anna Cristina “Rickie” Niceta Lloyd resigned on Wednesday effective immediately, CNN reported.
Longtime Washington bipartisan event planner Niceta Lloyd was hired as White House Social Secretary in 2017.
