Right-winger Allen West said on Saturday that after not getting vaccinated and using unproven drugs to prevent COVID, he contracted the virus and would likely be hospitalized with pneumonia and lack of oxygen.
Details arrived in a Twitter thread hours after West announced he was showing symptoms of COVID and was suspending events in person for his campaign for governor of Texas.
The former Trump-loving congressman said he and his wife, Angela, who is vaccinated but also infected, have been treated with monoclonal antibodies, which can help prevent serious illness if used early enough.
“There is a concern about my oxygen saturation levels, which are at 89 and they should be at 95,” West wrote.
“My chest x-rays show COVID pneumonia, not serious. I will probably be admitted to the hospital.
Earlier today, West tweeted that after his wife tested positive on Friday, he developed “a mild fever and mild body aches” and added that he “was already taking protocols for hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin “- two ineffective drugs popular with vaxxer crowd control.
Hydroxychloroquine is the antimalarial drug that was championed by Trump until studies found little or no benefit and federal regulators said it could in fact be dangerous.
Ivermectin is a drug used to treat parasites in humans and animals – it’s an animal variety known as horse paste – which has had skeptical vaccines that attacked livestock outlets, even though health officials say it shouldn’t be used to prevent COVID because it just doesn’t. it does not work.
There is no approved “protocol” for either drug.

The revelation that he felt bad after being exposed to an infected person came a day and a half after he was speaking at the gala for Mission Generation, an evangelical organization. A tweet about her appearance noted the event was ‘packed’ – and a photo showed West and the crowd being unmasked.
Mission Generation did not respond to an email with questions about COVID precautions at the gala and whether a contact tracing or possible exposure notification was underway.
West protested outside the mansion of Texas Governor Greg Abbott over COVID restrictions last year, then announced this summer he was running for his seat.
