A cyclist was attacked Monday by an alligator about 9 feet long in a park in Stuart, Florida, authorities said.
The unidentified man was cycling on a trail in Halpatiokee Regional Park around 11 a.m. when he lost control and fell “about six feet from an embankment” and into a body of water, wrote Martin County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook.
It would have landed near a female alligator which was near its nest, according to reports. After it fell, the alligator bit the man, seriously injuring him.

“The cyclist was able to free himself and then crawl to an area where he was assisted by a passer-by,” the sheriff’s office said.
Rescuers secured the scene and drove the man over a kilometer to a medical helicopter, authorities said. He was airlifted to a medical center in Fort Pierce with “traumatic” injuries, fire chief Shawn Lisowy said, according to TCPalm.
Trapper John Davidson was able to locate and trap the alligator after the attack, the sheriff’s office said.

“You have to be careful when you’re at the water’s edge, especially at this time of year,” Davidson said, according to Newsweek. “Females sit on nests and are particularly aggressive.”

An investigation into the attack is being conducted by agents of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

According to the FWC, there were 12 incidents of alligators biting people in Florida last year.
Stuart is approximately 110 miles north of Miami.
