CHICAGO – Chicago police investigators have deciphered the case: a 4 to 5 foot alligator lives in a lagoon in one of the city's most popular parks.
Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said on Tuesday that investigators went to the Humboldt Park lagoon in the west end of the city and confirmed that the unusual resident was present, as noted on social media.
The officials could not tell how the creature had gotten there.
City officials said that alligator traps were placed around the lagoon in the hope that the animal would swim in one of them and that it would be removed in all security.
Guglielmi says that the animal should be trapped "and transferred to a zoo for veterinary evaluation".
Alligators prefer warm climates like Florida, but we know that they temporarily survive the cold through a process similar to hibernation.
