Waymo, the autonomous driving technology company owned by Alphabet, says it is testing its Waymo One autonomous taxi service in San Francisco and invites the public to take it for a ride.
The company announced the move on Tuesday, noting that although its Trusted Tester program for autonomous ridesharing rolled out in the City by the Bay last week, it is not a new concept for the company that has started within Google.

Waymo began testing autonomous vehicles in San Francisco in 2009, and the company began offering its employees autonomous rides around the city earlier this year. Now, the company wants members of the general public to try out their carpooling service themselves and share their feedback.
But participants in the research-driven program won’t be alone in self-driving taxis. The company said that “all routes in the program will have an autonomous specialist on board at this time.”
Waymo launched its autonomous taxi service in the Phoenix metro area in 2017 in much the same way, starting with a car specialist before going fully self-sufficient with public service.

In addition to Waymo One, the company also has a self-driving trucking arm dubbed Waymo Via, which announced last week that it was ramping up operations with a major hub in south Dallas, Texas.
The two announcements come two months after Waymo announced it had received a $ 2.5 billion injection of new capital from investors.
