PLEASANTON, Calif. (KGO) – Amador Valley and Foothill High Schools in Pleasanton are suspending all in-person volunteer camps until the end of the semester.

This was after several students attended a party over the Thanksgiving vacation, according to Josh Butterfield, principal of Amador Valley High School.

Officials say this has resulted in potential positive COVID-19 cases and they are unable to locate the students who were there.

Amador Valley High School sent the following statement to parents:

Dear families of Amador Valley high school,

It has come to our attention that during the Thanksgiving vacation, students from Foothill, Amador Valley, and Village High School attended a social gathering which resulted in potential positive cases and exposure to COVID-19. Students participating in multiple camp cohorts and small cohort supervision programs from all three high schools were reported to be in attendance.

To date, we have not been able to exhaustively trace all the participants in this gathering. Therefore, Amador Valley and Foothill High Schools will be suspending all in-person volunteer camps until the end of the semester. The decision to close our camps is disheartening. However, due to the choices that have been made by students and in the absence of a definitive list of participants, we must take steps to prioritize the safety of all of our students and staff in these programs.

It is important for each of us to remember that our ability to organize camps and cohorts in person largely depends on the choices and actions of our community members. Your choices to wear a mask outside your home, wash your hands frequently, and not engage in close interactions with people outside your family make us all safer.

We urge the community to review the updated Alameda County Public Health guidelines regarding gatherings during the holidays. Students are encouraged to find alternative ways to connect and celebrate in order to do our part and reduce the associated risks. We implore our families to follow the guidelines outlined in the Bay Area County Recommendations for Travel and Vacation Gatherings, and to make choices that keep your families and our school community safe.

Our hearts go out to all of the students or their families who have been affected by COVID-19 and we wish them a speedy recovery.
