One of the questionable marketing and growth hacks like the gift of the Instagram loop is the influencer economy that I know of. Most influencers like me post relentlessly and strategically to strive to get people’s attention and follow them. This is the mantra of this newsletter!
However, I was kindly reminded this week that a person can gain popularity just by being talented and sincere.
After Amanda Gorman, the first national young poet laureate, delivered her powerful poem about a country in transition at Biden’s inauguration, people praised her on social media. She gained over 2 million Instagram followers in one day. His poem, which you can read in its entirety, was not only moving, but it cut the conscience of a grieving and shabby country.
“Somehow we survived and witnessed a nation that is not broken, but just unfinished / We, the successors of a country and a time when a black girl skinny descendant of slaves and raised by a single mother, can dream of becoming found himself reciting for one.
Gorman, who is the youngest person at 22 to perform a poem at a presidential inauguration, read confidently and confidently. Immediately on Twitter, Instagram and private chats, I saw people react: they were impressed, they went google it and clicked “follow her”. Twitter and Instagram accounts.
It was amazing how a five-minute appearance – albeit on one of the biggest national stages – viscerally captivated people. And for poetry – an art form that does not often capture the attention of the general public!
Gorman herself was also shocked. In her Instagram Stories later today, she said she had a hard time accessing her account and posting anything due to the influx of followers and the attention it was receiving.
“It’s not a game. It’s not a joke. I just looked up and had a million followers,” she said.
In an age where the influencer space is becoming more standard and professional – which, make no mistake, it’s awesome – it’s especially refreshing to remember that fans are often more constrained by ideas and ideas. thoughts only by what they see. An interesting or ambitious photo of someone or their family or their favorite activity is nice, and it serves its unique purpose – but it is only so deep. Gorman has not only helped people put their emotions into words, but she sparks new types of conversation in a way that poetry does so well.
I reached out to Gorman, which is a long time considering his fandom at the moment. But maybe one day we can talk about how poets can become successful influencers without compromising their art, and how social media can be a place for the cultivation of emotions and ideas as opposed to a gallery of waterfalls.
I was especially impressed and happy that a personality was able to lead with his work and his words first. She didn’t need to do big promotions or force herself into the limelight; in fact, First Lady Jill Biden allegedly first saw Gorman reading one of her poems in the Library of Congress and told the groundbreaking committee to contact her. Gorman writes beautifully and succinctly, and the attention it garnered has followed.
We really love to see it.
