Amanda Gorman, our National Youth Poet Laureate, has done it again – and by “that” I mean: made history by donning a statement coat. At the Joe Biden and Kamala Harris inauguration, where she became the youngest poet to recite at such an event, Gorman became a national sensation while wearing a yellow Prada coat that caused staggering spikes in Google searches for the words “yellow coat”. And Sunday night at the official Super Bowl poetry recitation party opener, Gorman dazzled in a powder blue jacket with shimmering embellished trims, from Moschino’s Spring 2021 collection. She paired the look with classic accessories: a pearl headband and silver hoops.

It was a fitting look for the event’s very first Poet Laureate, who read an original work titled “Chorus of the Captains”. In a pre-recorded video released before the game, she paid tribute to three honorary pandemic heroes selected by the National Football League: Los Angeles teacher Trimaine Davis, ICU nurse Suzie Dorner and veteran of the Marine James Martin, volunteer for the Wounded Warriors project. Speaking of frontline workers, Gorman said, “As we honor them, they are the ones who honor us every day.”

Poetry at the Super Bowl – that’s cool! In an Instagram post yesterday, Gorman explained why she, personally, is so encouraged by the couple: “Wow, we’re about to see some Super Bowl poetry for the first time,” she wrote. “This is a turning page for poetry, for art and for our country, because it means we think more imaginatively about the power of human stories, more broadly about how to connect even when we feel more siled. than ever. Also, I can’t tell you how many people I’ve heard say they were excited to watch the Super Bowl because there will be poetry.
