Amazon's voice assistant has acquired several skills that will allow consumers to ask questions such as "Alexa, post my blood glucose readings" and get quick answers, CNBC reported.
The technology giant can now sign commercial agreements with health service providers under the HIPAA (Law on Transferability and Health Insurance Liability), which means that third-party developers licensed in the US Health field can comply with the rules governing how sensitive health information is shared.
Thursday's announcement was accompanied by the launch of half a dozen voice programs developed by leading healthcare providers and companies such as the Boston Children's Hospital, insurance giant Cigna and Livongo, which help users to manage their chronic diseases.
The tools allow patients to use Alexa to access personalized information, such as post-surgery progress updates, prescription deliveries, and emergency care center locations, according to STAT News.
Amazon said Thursday that it was hoping to allow other health companies to use the HIPAA-compliant software.
"Every day, developers invent with voice to create useful and practical experiences for their customers," wrote Amazon in a blog post.
"These new [Alexa] the skills are designed to help clients manage a variety of home health care needs, simply by using the voice, "he said.
This announcement is Amazon's latest effort to break into the $ 3.5 billion health care market.
