Just a month ago, Amazon opened its first convenience store in New York without a cashier. Now he opens another one.
On Tuesday, the online retailer will welcome its first customers at 300 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. The 1700-square-foot store will be the thirteenth Amazon Go site to open in the United States.
"New York really is … what we're looking for," said Cameron James, vice president of physical stores at Amazon, in an interview. "It's a high density.Many people are on the move.This is a very good choice for us."
On May 7, the company opened its first Amazon Go in New York at Brookfield Place Mall in the downtown core. Both sites are located in the middle of busy business environments, with companies such as J.P. Morgan and Bank of America keeping their offices nearby.
James would not say how many places Amazon plans to bring to New York. But it has been reported that the company could open up to 3,000 of these no-till sites across the country by 2021, threatening companies like CVS, Walgreens and 7-Eleven.
"We have to be deliberate," said James about how Amazon is looking for real estate. The company is trying to determine "where is the customer we want to serve," he said.
The latter location will be slightly larger than the Brookfield store, which is 1,300 square feet. Most of Go's other sites are on the west coast, including Seattle and San Francisco. Amazon has already announced its fourteenth location at the Three Embarcadero Center in San Francisco's financial district.
The store on Park Avenue will also accept cash payments, which the company began when it opened at Brookfield Place last month and announced plans to do so for all future sites.
Amazon faced negative feedback from people who claimed that its cashless stores discriminated against people without a bank account or credit card. Today, in New York, it offers customers the opportunity to use paper money or coins by bringing in a store employee with a mobile device to help them check and to pay, the company said. Otherwise, buyers of Amazon Go just go in and out of the store's turnstiles, scanning the Amazon app, to buy items such as takeaway sandwiches, salads, kits meals and other necessities.
The store located on Park Avenue will also be the second Amazon Go store to serve coffee and espresso, which the company was testing in Seattle as part of an agreement with Starbucks. Buyers will be able to make their own coffees with milk, Caffe Americanos and mochas with a self-service kiosk in the store.
The Park Avenue store will be open Monday to Friday from 6am to 8pm.
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos also recently purchased a $ 80 million mega-residence in New York – a three-level penthouse at 212 Fifth Avenue – suggesting that he will move more time in town.
