Google’s latest Nest Hub might not be the only device tracking your sleep using radar. Bloomberg reports that Amazon has received an FCC waiver allowing it to use 60 GHz radar for sleep tracking. As with Google’s technology, you can check for sleep issues without having to wear a device like the Halo Band.
The technology could also be used for gesture navigation, especially for people with reduced mobility or with speech impairments that would prevent them from using conventional controls. Amazon didn’t hesitate to draw comparisons with Google – the company cited the Pixel 4’s radar when it requested the waiver.
Amazon didn’t provide much clue as to which products would use radar tracking, but it did describe the devices as “non-mobile.” In other words, they’re probably Echo devices monitoring your rest from your bedside table.
It’s not certain when Amazon might ship equipment equipped with radar, although the recent launch of the Echo Show without this equipment suggests you could wait a while.
However, Amazon has strong incentives to update its line of devices. In addition to competing with Google, the internet giant is making a big leap forward in healthcare between Halo and services like Amazon Pharmacy. Radar sleep tracking could make the Echo a valuable health tool, not just a handy companion for playing music or controlling your smart home.
