Amazon is building a smart fridge to judge you for keeping only leftovers and condiments in the house

A self-aware device that knows what’s inside of itself

Every fall, Amazon hosts its annual hardware event, where it launches products so quickly that it’s often hard to keep pace. Last week, the company showcased its new Astro robot, a full-size Echo Show, and a budget smart thermostat, but it hasn’t done so yet. Although it missed this year’s event, Amazon is working on building an internet-connected refrigerator designed to track your food.

This report comes from Business Insider, which claims the appliance is being built by the same team behind Amazon’s “Go” self-checkout stores (via Ars Technica). The refrigerator – which currently goes by the codename “Project Pulse” – has two goals in mind: to show everything that is stored at any given time, and to track your shopping habits to offer suggestions over time. This is Amazon we’re talking about, after all.

To power the fridge, the development team uses a scaled-down version of the cameras from Amazon Go stores, which allow shoppers to grab what they need and go without stopping at a cash register. Obviously, you’ve already purchased whatever is stored in your refrigerator, so Project Pulse is focused on alerting you whenever specific items run out. There could be recipe suggestions in the works as well, which seems perfect for those nights when you’re not sure what to prepare for dinner.

Once you’ve run out of food, you can re-order items from Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods right from the fridge. If you are already buying your weekly supply of products from either brand, Project Pulse looks like a perfect match. Otherwise, you’d probably be better off sticking with your regular, stupid old fridge.

If you’re worried about Amazon’s expertise in, you know, manufacturing a full-size refrigerator, don’t worry – the company is planning to partner with an outside home appliance company to build the unit for it. -same. Unfortunately, it is not known when (or if) it will ever hit the market. Amazon has a habit of announcing its products long before the actual release date, and despite that, Project Pulse still managed to miss last week’s event. If it ever goes on sale, you can expect it to cost a pretty dime.
