Disney has just announced its intention to roll out its new streaming service in November. The executives announced that Disney + would be available on platforms and devices designed by Apple, Google, Microsoft, Sony and Roku. Amazon is missing from this list with whom Disney has had a slap fight over and over in recent years. This ongoing quarrel means that if you like Mickey Mouse and own a TV Fire, you're kind of fucked up.
We do not know how or why the negotiations between Amazon and Disney have failed, but the link that exists between the two companies is well documented. Amazon has always been the instigator. As early as 2014, the online retailer had regularly blocked Disney and Marvel titles from preorders, delayed DVD shipping or limited sales. At about the same time, Amazon used a similar tactic against Warner Brothers movies and Hachette Book titles. Experts suspected Amazon was trying to pressure studios and publishers to negotiate better terms and conditions.
Amazon kept doing this to Disney, though. In 2018, reports revealed that Amazon was restricting sales of Star Wars: The Last Jedi Blu-ray Discs reserved for primary members. For a time, this product was considered "out of stock", although many were on sale at Target or Best Buy. The last time Amazon blocked its titles, Disney simply directed visitors to these big box retailers. In the space of a year, most recent versions of the Star Wars and Marvel universes were exclusives reserved for Premium members. One wonders if Amazon was again trying to intimidate Disney or prevent its superhero-like customers from paying for their premium subscription.
Who knows what to do with Disney Boxing at the launch of Disney Plus. It is possible that this is another contractual dispute that leaves Fire TV customers without full access to Disney, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic content. (These are the top five Disney brands included in the service.) It is also quite possible that Disney and Amazon settle all this before November.
That said, if you do not own Fire TV and you like Disney content, you can expect to pay for a new streaming service soon! Disney + will be available November 12 in the United States for $ 7 a month or $ 70 a year. The service will be launched on the same day in Canada and the Netherlands and will be operational in Australia and New Zealand on November 19. Once again, Disney + will be available on a multitude of devices and platforms, including Apple TV, iOS, Google Chromecast, Android, Android TV, Microsoft Xbox One, Sony PlayStation 4, Roku decoders and Roku TVs.
Sorry, Fire TV. You are apparently late.
