Amazon offers employees $ 10,000 and 3 months salary to start their own delivery business – TechCrunch

Following the announcement of an Amazon project aimed at reducing Prime Shipping to a day, the company announced this morning the extension of its Delivery Service Partner program, which includes now a new incentive encouraging existing Amazon employees to start their own parcel delivery business. The partnership program, announced for the first time last year, includes access to Amazon's broadcast technology, hands-on training and a series of other discounts on assets and services such as car rental and insurance. For employees, it now includes a $ 10,000 incentive.

The retailer says it will fund start-up costs of up to $ 10,000, as well as the equivalent of three months of the former employee's last gross salary, to give them the opportunity to start their new business. without worrying about a salary interruption.

Amazon said last year that people had started their own delivery business with only $ 10,000. At that time, veterans had the opportunity to get the $ 10,000 back because Amazon was investing $ 1 million in a program to cover start-up costs.

The new incentive to do the same for all employees – and to give them three months more pay – is a much broader commitment. And that makes sense, given Amazon's high ambitions to double the speed of its shipments.

Employees – or any other contractor – who wish to become a delivery partner, can rent custom blue vans bearing the Amazon smile logo on the side and benefit from other discounts, including fuel, insurance, brand uniforms, etc.

Prior to launching the partner program, Amazon relied on its Amazon Flex workforce to help deliver packages to help reduce costs. But these suburban workers were often faced with too much uncertainty about their pay because of gasoline price fluctuations that reduced profits, lack of insurance and logistical difficulties caused by the attempt to deliver parcels to from a smaller, unbranded personal vehicle.

Delivery partners, meanwhile, could earn up to $ 300,000 a year by moving their fleet to 40 vehicles, says Amazon. The company announced last year that hundreds of small business owners would be hiring tens of thousands of drivers in the United States.

This is already happening. Since the program's launch in June 2018, more than 200 small businesses have hired "thousands" of local drivers, Amazon said this morning. She also plans to add hundreds of small businesses this year.

This incentive for employees also comes at a time when Amazon is increasingly automating its warehouses, which may put some workers out of work. A Reuters report released this morning indicates that Amazon is deploying machines that will automate a job currently held by thousands of workers: putting customer orders in boxing. Some of these workers may be candidates for the implementing partner program right now, knowing that they may be looking for the next step – before they are fired.

For Amazon, the funds invested today to help employees make the transition to this new business could be recovered over time, with the retailer reducing its reliance on USPS, UPS and FedEx by transferring more of its business to his own distribution network where he has control. However, in the short term, all of Amazon's distribution partners will benefit from its intention to spend $ 800 million to ensure that the new default award is shipped within one day.

Employee employment incentives are available in the United States, the United Kingdom and Spain.
