Amazon Restaurant Delivery Service Shutters

Amazon Restaurants is closing its doors in the United States and will cease operations on June 24, Amazon said. The service was launched in 2015 in Seattle before expanding to nearly two dozen cities and bringing food to Premium members.

"Many of the few employees involved in this decision have already found new roles at Amazon, and others will benefit from personalized support to find a new role within or outside of society," said the company in a statement.

With the closure in the United States, Amazon Restaurants is officially dead. He did not win traction against its global competitors, including DoorDash, GrubHub (WORM), Uber (UBER) Eat, postmates and Just eat. (JSTTY)

Grubhub shares rose 5% early in the session following Amazon's announcement.

Amazon started calling Restaurants in November after closing the service in London – the only non-US site where it operated. Then, in May, Amazon invested in Deliveroo, a London-based delivery service that operates in 14 countries and territories around the world, including Australia, France and Germany.
Although Amazon is dismantling this part of its business in the United States, the company still distributes food products in other forms. Prime members can shop at Whole Foods, its supermarket chain, which she bought for $ 13.7 billion in 2017.
It also offers purchases via AmazonFresh, a service that costs $ 14.99 more per month for Prime members.
