The battle for hourly workers intensifies beyond minimum wage in the United States, as retailers, restaurant chains, garbage haulers and meat processors increasingly consider the possibility of a free university education as a means of attracting and retaining staff.

Amazon.com Inc. plans to announce Thursday that it is expanding its educational benefits by offering more than 750,000 hourly American employees the opportunity to enroll in a fully paid licensing program after 90 days of employment. The e-commerce giant says employees will be eligible to earn degrees at educational institutions across the country.
