Amazon Web Services powers the big players on the Web.

A prolonged outage of Amazon Web Services – a staple component for a large number of sites and applications – shut down part of the internet on Wednesday, as previously reported by The Verge. The sites affected include not only major web players like Flickr, Adobe Spark and Roku, but at least three news outlets.
The Tampa Bay Times, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and the Capital Gazette have all taken to Twitter to let readers know about their AWS-related downtime.

The New York City Transit Authority said that too was affected, causing the inability to update a metro line alert. Other affected sites and services include Glassdoor, Anchor, owned by Spotify, Getaround, iRobot, and Pokemon Go.
In a statement to The Verge, Amazon said the culprit was its Kinesis Data Streams API and said it was working to resolve the issue. “Kinesis experienced an increase in error rates this morning in our US-East-1 region which impacted some other AWS services,” he said.
“For Kinesis Data Streams, the issue affects the subsystem that is responsible for handling incoming requests. The team has identified the root cause and is working to resolve the issue affecting this subsystem, ”he added later.
Amazon did not immediately respond to CNET’s request for comment.
