Amazon plans to launch a new pair of Alexa-controlled wireless headphones, according to a new report from CNBC. Interestingly, the device would have an accelerometer that would be the backbone of many of the fitness-based features that Amazon is considering.
More specifically, the report states that Amazon's headphones "will be able to monitor things such as distance traveled, calories burned and the pace of the race." From what we can infer, it seems that Amazon's wireless headsets are a bit of a cross between the Apple AirPods and a standard fitness tracker. Overall, this seems like a pretty smart strategy.
Amazon's interest in deploying a pair of headsets is not surprising, given that Amazon has never been afraid to enter new markets. In addition, the success of products such as the Apple Watch shows that there is an incredibly strong demand for accessories with a host of fitness and health-related features.
CNBC adds:
Amazon headphones will need an Apple or Android phone to use because they do not have built-in cellular connectivity. The price of new headphones should be less than $ 100, said this person, undercutting the competing products of Apple or Bang & Olufsen.
Release date details are unclear, but we'll probably fix all the missing pieces later this week when Amazon hosts a hardware event in Seattle on Wednesday.
Regarding other elements, Amazon could be announced in just a few days, a report released earlier this summer said that Amazon was working on a high-end version of its Echo smart speaker, with more audio features widespread on more expensive speaker systems. Amazon has also had rumors about introducing some sort of advanced voice-activated robot.
