BERLIN, Nov. 29 (Reuters) – Union Verdi on Sunday called on workers at a German Amazon warehouse to strike for the second time in a week in an effort to disrupt order processing following the ‘ “ Black Friday ” November 27.
Scheduled to start Monday’s night shift and end at the end of Tuesday’s late shift, the strike follows a three-day strike between Thursday and Saturday last week in which more than 500 workers took part, Verdi said.
Verdi has been organizing strikes at Amazon in Germany – the company’s largest market after the United States – since 2013, along with other unions in hopes of forcing the e-commerce company to recognize collective agreements that s ‘apply to retail employees of other companies.
An Amazon spokesperson said last month the company offered “excellent” wages, with benefits and working conditions comparable to other large employers.
The U.S. retail giant has seen its sales skyrocket around the world as restrictions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus send consumers online, making it harder for some physical stores to compete.
Verdi argues that this reinforced the case for higher wages, adding that workers were not sufficiently protected against the spread of the coronavirus. (Report by Caroline Copley edited by Raissa Kasolowsky)
