12:38 PM PT – Amazon tells TMZ … that they have removed the product in question from their site.
Amazon is doing it again … by selling a product with an obviously racist description that has sort of slipped through the cracks – this time targeting a doll’s braided hair.
Check out this children’s doll which is currently sold in the Amazon digital marketplace – it’s a 14 inch action figure meant to represent a little black girl with braids. However, the way the description emphasizes it is more than just raising an eyebrow, to say the least.
It reads: “Adorable 14 inch black Doli Yearning doll with casual red skirt and gorgeous colorful dirty braid fashion doll for ages 3 and up. Interactive BPA free safety product. Well designed collector box.” In case you missed that … “dirty and colorful braid fashion”.
What does that mean, you ask? Welp, apparently, this company – Doli Yearning – thinks braided hair is dirty, and they feel the need to call it “colored”. BTW … Doli Yearning is a Chinese company – looks like it’s been on Amazon for less than a year.
Doli Yearning has other dolls like this as well – except that several of the others are white girls, and there is no mention of their skin color or hair. Take, for example, this doll with blond hair rolled up into buns.
Description reads here … “Adorable 14 inch Doli Yearning Doll with Denim Suit and Colorful Headbands Fashion Superb Doll for ages 3 and up Interactive Playtime Safety Product BPA Free Well designed collector box.” The same goes for their other “white” dolls.
So what do we do with all of this ??? This is the same problem we’ve seen time and time again with Amazon and their filtering process for product descriptions – or a lack of it. There just doesn’t seem to be much oversight on this.
Granted, Amazon partners with virtually millions of merchants and retailers, and might argue that they can’t comb through every one of them to eliminate these horrific descriptions – but the counterpoint to that is … Jeff Bezos is incredibly rich, and he absolutely can.
Let’s go together, yes?
