Amazon’s next fantasy series, The wheel of time, had an eventful panel at New York Comic Con today. Showrunner Rafe Judkins and cast Rosamunde Pike, Daniel Henney, Josha Stradowski, Marcus Rutherford, Zoë Robbins and Madeleine Madden joined Nerdist’s Amy Ratcliffe to discuss what viewers can expect from the show’s first season, as well as ‘preview and exciting news on the cast for the already green light for the second season.
Judkins was at San Diego Comic-Con this summer to give a preview of Amazon’s adaptation of Robert Jordan’s 14-pound American fantasy series, but with the premiere in just over a month, NYCC ticket holders had a much more concrete vision. A clip from the show was previewed during the panel. Judkins described it as “Moiraine’s first arrival in the Two Rivers. It’s cool because it’s when we see all of the lovely people on this panel really interacting with each other and being in the same room for the very first time in the series. So, it’s that moment that sort of activates everything in the Wheel of Time. This is the moment when these kids who live in this mountain village, their life is never the same from the moment they walk around town. So this is the time.
The clip shows Egwene (Madden) serving drinks at her parents’ inn in Two Rivers, the village where the book begins. Rand (Stradowski) stands against a wall and looks at Egwene, and we see clues to the love story that will be at the center of this first season. Perrin (Rutherford) refers to some sort of ceremony Egwene went through earlier, but before the two can reveal anything too much, Moiraine (Pike) and Lan (Henney) make their appearance as Aes. Sedai and Warder. We see the reactions of the main characters, and it’s Nynaeve (Robbins) who speaks first to Lan – surely exciting readers of the books who know what’s in store for their characters. We even get a very brief glimpse of Barney Harris as Mat Cauthon, despite Harris’ imminent departure from the show, as he was recast for the second season.
Watching the clip gave viewers a glimpse into how quickly the series can evolve, a question that has been raised since the adaptation was announced. The information that had long come from the books arrives almost immediately, with the hostel mistress noticing Moiraine’s Aes Sedai ring on the screen.
Judkins discussed how the series would stack up against other fantastic stories audiences may already be familiar with. He noted that when the books first came out in 1990, they were quite groundbreaking, with an overall cast, multiple points of view in the narrative, and the fact that the main characters were split between men and women in the middle. instead of focusing heavily on one genre. He then acknowledged that The wheel of time is heavily influenced by Eastern philosophies like Hinduism and Buddhism, and that ultimately history is not so much a fight for good against evil as an attempt to reestablish a sense of balance in the world.
The entire cast read the series – with Stradowski being the most advanced, having reached Book 11 – and they were inspired by the niceties Jordan gave to their characters. Every member of the cast feels fully connected to the character they play on screen.
Despite an introduction in the first book, there was one particular character missing from the first season’s cast list. Fans will be delighted to hear that they will finally see Elayne Trakand, Andor’s daughter-heiress, in season two, played by Ceara Coveney (Father, Emma’s amazing world). Judkins also announced that actors Natasha O’Keefe (Peaky Blinders, Unsuitable) and Meera Syal (The Kumars at n ° 42, Broadchurch) will also join the cast. While it’s not clear which characters they will play, Judkins has hinted that they will play two of the most important characters in the entire series.
