Thus, AMD has officially confirmed the launch of the Navi GPU in the third quarter of 2019 (a subject we had exclusively discussed) during their call for results. The Navi GPU is the expected successor of the Vega architecture and has been under development for several years now. Gamescom 2019, August 21-24, is the most likely event to be launched in the third quarter (caution: this is an enlightened assumption, not a comment from 'a source).
Launch of the AMD Navi graphics processor in the coming months, probably during Gamescom 2019
If you remember the exclusivity that I have published on Navi's launch date, you will remember, the GPU will be launched about a month after the Ryzen 3000 series (7 nm), which should be launched at Computex. This means we are planning a launch by the end of July-mid-August. Now that AMD has confirmed its launch in the third quarter, the rumor mill will certainly go into high gear before the actual launch. This is going to be the biggest game launch since their Vega revelation in late 2016.
AMD also announced the launch of Ryzen processors at 7 nm in the third quarter, but this is old news (if you follow the scene of the leak) and we expect them to unveil it at Computex Keynote . We could even get a glimpse of the next Navi GPU – although the launch itself only happens later.
Navi's GPU will be somewhere between Vega 56 and 64 in terms of performance and we've heard conflicting stories about its architecture. My original source (and one of the most reliable) claims that the Navi GPU will not be based on the GCN architecture, but a recent leak seems to contradict this. It was also said that the first variant of Navi launched would contain only 40 CPUs, which equates to an SP / UC ratio of 2560 for GCN. This is obviously not the most sophisticated variant of Navi and, as far as I know, it will be called Navi 12.
This makes sense, as AMD is waiting for its time to perfect the flagship product that will be deployed later. In other words, the rumor says that Navi 10 will not be the first GPU out of the gate, contrary to tradition, and that the company will take a bottom-up approach this time. Given their current position in the GPU market of targeting the perf / $ segment instead of pure performance, that makes a lot of sense.
