The big picture: AMD has been in tears with its Ryzen desktop processors for some time now, but new sales data from one of Germany’s largest computer hardware retailers reveals that Intel is still fighting. And with Alder Lake just around the corner, things are looking even more promising for the blue team.
The breakdown is from Reddit user ingebor, who regularly shares data regarding the desktop processor market and details Mindfactory’s desktop processor sales. According to the data, 85% of the processors sold by Mindfactory in May 2021 came from AMD, leaving only 15% of the pie to Intel. By July, Intel had narrowed the gap a bit and captured 24% of processor sales.
The data is significant for several reasons.
First of all, if it represents only one retailer, the trends are consistent with what we see in other retailers. Eight of the top 10 best-selling processors on Amazon are AMD chips. On Newegg, seven of the top 10 chips are from AMD.
Another advantage of Intel is the imminent launch of Alder Lake. Chipzilla is expected to unveil Alder Lake’s high-end chips at an event in October, but could save the rest of the lineup for CES 2022 in early January.
Alder Lake will be the company’s first chip to use a big.LITTLE architecture and is expected to be compatible with Z690 motherboards. Earlier reports suggest that the Z690 chipset will support both DDR4 and DDR5 and may support PCIe 5.0.
