Last week, AMD launched its latest series of Ryzen 3000 processors. The third-generation Ryzen chips are the first to be based on 7nm technology, but there is a problem for users of some Linux-based systems.

For distributions based on newer versions of the Linux kernel, a problem prevents systems from booting. Some users have successfully patched the systemd component with an older version to allow a successful boot, but a BIOS update from AMD is required.

Although the startup problem has been noticed by many users, it is Michael Larabel writing for Phoronix who has put the problem in evidence. In his review of the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X and Ryzen 9 3900X, he said that the chips "offer unbelievable Linux performance, but with significant reserve". He has encountered problems with various Linux distributions, as he explains:

Although Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and older Linux distributions start Zen 2, I have not yet managed to start Ubuntu 19.04, Manjaro Linux and Fedora Workstation 31. All the recent Linux distributions I've tested were designed on two different systems. around the Ryzen 7 3700X and Ryzen 9 3900X, every time at the beginning of the boot process as soon as you try to start the Systemd services, all the systemd services fail to start.

He then writes:

I confirmed with AMD that they had an outstanding problem around "5.0.9" (the standard core of Ubuntu 19.04), but at the time of writing these lines, it was Had not helped to better understand the problem. AMD said its tests focused mainly on Ubuntu 18.04 given its LTS status. I've also confirmed the same behavior with other Windows reviewers that sometimes handle Linux.

This is not the only problem with the chip. Another problem means that Destiny 2 can not run, causing frustration for the players.

AMD is aware of both of these issues and is working to resolve them. In a statement, the company said:

AMD identified the root cause and implemented a BIOS fix for a problem affecting the ability to run certain Linux and Destiny 2 distributions on Ryzen 3000 processors. We distributed an updated BIOS to our motherboard partners and we we expect consumers to have access to the new BIOS in the coming days.
