It's no secret that AMD is at the top of its game with its 3rd generation Ryzen processors and Navi graphics, but we're starting to see signs that hardcore PC enthusiasts are starting to side with Team Red .
People at KitGuru have discovered PassMark statistics, a very popular processor benchmarking tool, suggesting that AMD has gained market share on Intel. Specifically, in the third quarter of 2019, AMD's market share climbed to 31.9%, up from 23.1% in the second quarter of 2019. Similarly, Intel dropped to 68.10% in the third quarter of 2019 compared with 76.9% in the previous quarter.
It is important to note that this does not take into account the amount of processors sold – for the moment, it would seem that AMD is ahead on this point. It only takes into account the number of processors analyzed via PassMark. There are many – heck, probably the majority of them – never compare their hardware with this type of tool.
This means, however, that the type of people evaluating their hardware (PC enthusiasts) is adopting AMD hardware at a higher rate. This is probably because the AMD Ryzen 9 3900X processor is more powerful than the Intel Core i9 9900K processor – although Intel does not agree.
According to these results, AMD and Intel are closer than they have been since the fourth quarter of 2007. And, with the next generation of AMD Ryzen Threadripper Threadripper scheduled for the end of the year, this gap could still be reduced.
