On Tuesday, the American Football Federation announced that it will offer the respective player unions of the men’s and women’s national teams the same contract proposal.
The news comes after generations of players on the United States Women’s National Team denounced the unequal treatment of the USSF and, more recently, a series of high-profile court proceedings.
“US Soccer firmly believes that the best way forward for everyone involved, and for the future of the sport in the United States, is a single compensation structure for the two senior national teams,” a statement read from the Federation, which has not published the full details of the contracts.
On Wednesday morning, the associations of male and female players had not yet publicly commented on the proposed contracts. CNBC Make It asked for comment but did not immediately receive a response.
If the organizations choose to continue to negotiate separately – as do other international football programs – the USSF has indicated that it will invite the players’ association to participate in contract negotiations with the men’s association “in the process. the interest of full transparency ”.
The Federation also says it is dedicated to “finding a way to equalize the FIFA World Cup prizes between USMNT and USWNT.” At the 2018 FIFA Men’s World Cup in Russia, 32 teams competed for $ 400 million in cash prizes. The US men’s team failed to qualify for the tournament, but champions France took home $ 38 million. At the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, 24 teams competed for $ 30 million and the United States won $ 4 million as champions.
In 2016, five American players filed a discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and in 2019, 28 USWNT members filed a complaint against the USSF for gender discrimination and unequal pay.
The players claimed that if the men’s and women’s teams won each of the 20 non-tournament games they are contractually obligated to play, the players on the women’s team would earn a maximum of $ 99,000 ($ 4,950 per game), while men’s team players would earn $ 263,320 ($ 13,166 per game).
The two sides entered into mediation on the lawsuit, but the conversations collapsed. Although claims for equal pay for the trial were dismissed by Federal Judge R. Gary Klausner in 2020, the women appealed the ruling in 2021.
Earlier in 2021, a partial working conditions agreement was reached, providing women with charter flights, hotel rooms, site selection and professional staff support fair to that of the men’s national team.
“I don’t think a truly public trial is in [the USSF’s] best interests [and] Hope it’s not ours, “Megan Rapinoe, former USWNT captain, told CNBC Make It in 2019.” It’s going to take a lot of time and energy from everyone. to go through a full public trial. “
When asked how women can best negotiate a raise on their own, Rapinoe gave a simple piece of advice: “Don’t back down,” she said. “You are probably going against your employer or your boss and it can be very intimidating, but believe in yourself and believe in what you are doing and just don’t back down.”
