While you were busy finding your friends in Westeros on Sunday, American idol continued its own game of thrones while the Top 14 was fighting to conquer the electoral public. And with four eliminations scheduled for the Monday results episode, it was basically the calm before the Red Wedding.
Which singers managed to claim the right Idol crown, and which ones could not really go over the wall? Let's decompose the 14 performances of tonight and discover:
WOOL HARDY (Elvis, "All is well") | Seasoned like a beautiful roast chicken, this self-proclaimed "bayou boy" was a no-brainer to launch the season 17 gigs. Honestly, Hardy was so comfortable singing this song and in front of the mic he almost had the # He looks bored from time to time. Katy Perry was right when she said that he clearly knew his strengths, but I would still like to see him step out of his comfort zone. Grade: B + (Click here to watch!)
EVELYN CORMIER (Jimmy Eat World, "The Middle") | Causing to speak, I gasped twice before Cormier even began to sing: First, I gasped when she mentioned that she was on 90 Day Fiancee – who immediately responded to all the questions I had about her wedding – this pop-punk classic. And the crowd seemed just as excited, combining Cormier's energy and sending it back to him. I'll be honest: I was not sure that such an aggressive song fits well with Cormier's airy vocal style, but as I was reminded tonight, she interval. Grade: A-
ALYSSA RAGHU ("She was mine" of Waitress) | On the emotional level, it was a perfect choice; it was as if Raghu was singing his own season 16 (although the lyrics speak very specifically about a pregnant woman trapped in a violent relationship). And from a technical point of view, it was just as perfect. The emotion, the drama, everything was there. Some of the biggest names in Broadway – including Idol"Katharine McPhee – played this on stage and I think Raghu made the apron proud. Grade: A
EDDIE ISLAND (Elton John, "Benny and the Jets") | I have only two words to say for the moment: Haley. Reinhart. This goddess has already given us IdolThe final version of this song, so why no one would even marvel at trying to impress us with that goes beyond me. Yet this is exactly what Island did on Sunday, offering an energetic but uneven performance, a victim of the nervousness of the first night. You knew it was wrong when the first thing that Perry mentioned in his review was the coolness of the hydraulics. And speaking of the judges' criticism, why was Luke Bryan so surprised by Island's jacket? Did he ever see Elton John's wardrobe? Grade: C (Click here to watch!)
RILEY THOMPSON (Sara Evans, "Suds in the bucket") | Juliette Barnes, is it you? Thompson's performances were not only happy from start to finish, but she had a handful of amazing notes that easily earned her a place in the Top 10. Grade: A (Click here to watch!)
WADE COTA (Ray LaMontagne, "Trouble") | After telling us the story of his hoarse voice – which seems to have its roots in the metal – Cota presented a moving and intense interpretation of this ubiquitous folk song, prompting Lionel Richie to assign a new song to him. nickname: "The Hammer". Grade: A- (Click here to watch!)
Dimitrius Graham (Ed Sheeran, "Perfect") | Apparently, it is possible that a performance is very impressive and very disappointing, as we have seen with this tragically uneven performance. Despite some breathtaking high notes, the voices were largely incoherent. It was a bold new arrangement of a song we're tired of hearing, so I'll give it to him. Category B- (Click here to watch!)
MADISON VANDENBURG (Alicia Keys, "Fallin & # 39;") | There was the slightest doubt that VanDenburg was a gift from Idol Gods, tonight's performance should have taken care of that. From her smooth piano playing to the incredible control she displayed on her voice, she had me checked twice or even three times to make sure she was seventeen. Brava, queen. Brava! (I also appreciated that the judges finally agreed to end the comparison between Kelly Clarkson – this is her own star!) Grade: A +
JEREMIAH LLOYD HARMON (Elton John, "We all fall in love sometimes") | First of all, I'm happy that "things are getting better" for Harmon. Of the countless stories of sobs this season, it is his stories that speak to me most directly. Speaking of sobs, Perry perfectly summed up my feelings when she told Harmon how proud she was of her success: "I'm so happy because you're such a gift," she said. "You are a light for the world." Honestly, I will not even interview Richie for saying that Harmon could potentially compete with legends like Freddie Mercury. (Anyone else hoping for a Harmon / Adam Lambert duo in the finale?) Grade: A +
UCHE (Bruno Mars, "Finesse") | Whatever it is, Uche gave it to us tonight. All. Every last piece. His energy was electric, his dance was at the rendezvous and his voice was breathtaking. You know what? It was so amazing that I'm going to do something I never thought I could do, let alone at the very beginning of the competition. I bless Uche's opinion on "Finesse" with my elusive double. Grade: A ++
ALEJANDRO ARANDA (Drake, "One Dance") | Just when I thought Aranda could not be colder – ottoman! – He turns out to be a dj fly-ass. Tonight, he broke away from the "cold acoustic vibrations" he gave us so far, opting instead for a complete electronic experience. Did I totally understand it? Not at first. But did I enjoy it? And do I respect his devil for having achieved such a risky performance? Yes and Yes! Grade: A- (Click here to watch!)
ASHLEY HESS (Coldplay, "Fix You") | Dear friends, we are gathered here to celebrate the blessed union of this singer with this song. From the hectic start to the dazzling finale, Hess sailed in this performance with the effortless balance of grace and power we expect from the young Carole King. Grade: A-
LACI STAND KAYE (Blink-182, "Miss You") | After promising America that she would try to be "less orange" – which sounds political but actually talking about his tan – Booth blessed us with a breathtaking reimagination of an underrated Blink-182 song. And just as the lyrics suggest, I suspect Booth will be the voice in our heads all season. Grade: A +
WALKER BURROUGHS ("Climb to the mountain" in The Sound of Music) | Holy choice of unexpected song! Not that I'm complaining. Even the mother superior would have approved Burroughs' interesting interpretation of this standard of musical theater – and as you well know, she does not approve of no matter what.
