US Olympian Gwen Berry has tweeted her support for a handful of English football stars after suffering racist abuse online following their loss to Italy at the European Championship.

Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka have been the targets of racist taunts on Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms. Berry, the hammer-thrower star who was recently in the national spotlight for turning his back on the flag during the US Olympic trials, came to their defense on Twitter.

“Heartbreaking situation! Why am I not surprised! This hatred is the reason why athletes cannot “just be athletes”. We must stand up against these social issues until they no longer affect our lives! I send my love to Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka and their families, ”she wrote.

She added, “They only love us when it benefits them.”

Berry was among those who sent strong messages of support to the athletes.

Prince Williams and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also condemned the racist attacks.

“I am sickened by the racist abuse targeting England players after last night’s game,” the British royal said in a statement. Publish on Twitter. “It is totally unacceptable that players have to endure this heinous behavior. It must stop now and everyone involved must be held accountable.”

Johnson added: “This England team deserves to be hailed as heroes, not racist abuse on social media. Those responsible for these appalling abuses should be ashamed of themselves.”
