A man shopping in New Mexico walked back to a car filled with 15,000 honey bees that had apparently entered through an open window as he spent 10 minutes shopping.
Surprisingly, the man – who was not named in the New York Times report detailing his unexpected travel companions – did not notice the sudden presence of a giant swarm of buzzing insects in the backseat of his vehicle until it moves away.
“Then he turned around and looked like a ‘holy cow’,” Jesse Johnson, an off-duty firefighter and paramedic whose hobby is beekeeping, said of the man’s reaction in an interview with the newspaper. “He called 911 because he didn’t know what to do.”
Johnson and his fellow firefighters helped the man remove the bees and put them in an empty beehive box.
He said the bees are likely crawling with a queen and looking for a new home – which makes them more docile and easier to handle as they don’t defend their territory.
The entire incident proceeded largely without injury – but not entirely.
“A guy got his lip pricked and we made fun of him the next morning,” Johnson told The Times.
