American TV series

Last year, Lupita Nyong'o (right) and Danai Gurira played in the huge blockbuster success Black Panther at Marvel Studios. But soon, they will team up for something very different on the small screen.

HBO Max, WarnerMedia's next streaming service, has announced a direct order for an adaptation of the series. Americanah, the best-selling novel written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Not unlike Black Panther, the story has its roots in Africa and follows a woman born in Nigeria who leaves for America and her extraordinary experiences with love, sorrow, adversity and self-discovery. Learn more about Americanah TV series below.

HBO Max sent a press release announcing the order of 10 episodes of Americanah, of which Lupita Nyong'o will play the main role and executive product. As for Danai Gurira, she speaks a role behind the camera as the pilot's writer and host of the series as a whole. This is not the first time Gurira writes for a major project since she has already won a Tony Award for Broadway production Eclipse. Here is what she said about the work on the project:

"By Americanah, Chimamanda brought the African female voice to the dominant consciousness in an unprecedented way. He is intellectually incisive, accusing, yet humorous and full of humanity. She makes unheard, familiar, universal and yet clearly specific voices. I am honored to bring to life his incredible novel on screen. I'm excited to be collaborating again with Lupita, who brings her incredible talent as an interpreter and producer to guide this project, as well as the unbridled enthusiasm of HBO MAX to bring this innovative story to the television audience. "

If you are looking for a more detailed description of Americanah's history, here is Amazon's summary:

Ifemelu and Obinze are young and in love when they leave Nigeria under military domination to travel to the west. Ifemelu, beautiful and sure of herself, goes to America where, despite her academic success, she is forced to struggle for the first time with what it means to be black. Quiet and thoughtful, Obinze had hoped to join her, but after the closure of America after September 11, he plunged into a dangerous and undocumented life in London. Fifteen years later, they meet in a newly democratic Nigeria and revive their passion, one for the other and for their homeland.

It sounds like a pretty powerful novel, with a cultural influence and perspective that can only be captured by talents like Lupita Nyong'o and Danai Gurira, two actresses of African descent. Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content at HBO Max, agrees wholeheartedly:

"Americanah has triggered a cultural phenomenon and is revered by fans around the world. It has had a profound impact on me as one of the most moving, socially relevant and romantic stories of our time. With exceptional talents like Lupita and Danai in front of and behind the camera, this series will offer viewers a unique, sincere and unforgettable experience. "

HBO Max does not have a launch date yet and we do not know when Americanah will take off, but we can not wait to hear more soon.
