In October 2018, the American Express® Gold Card has been refreshed and introduced a more rewarding point structure than ever before.
Basics of the Amex Gold Card
The card has an annual fee of $ 250 (Fees and Fees), but offers the following return on investment:
- 4x loyalty points in American restaurants
- 4x loyalty points in US supermarkets, up to $ 25,000 worth of purchases per year
- 3x loyalty points on flights booked directly with airlines or via amextravel.com
In addition to this, to help offset the annual fee, the card has offered up to $ 220 in annual credits, including:
- A $ 120 dining voucher, which gives registered members up to $ 10 a month in statement credits when they use their card at eligible gourmet partners, including Shake Shack, the Cheesecake Factory, the Ruth Chris Steakhouse and the Grubhub / Seamless
- A $ 100 credit on air taxes per calendar year
Amex Gold Card enhanced bonus category
In my opinion, one of the main disadvantages of Amex Gold Card has been that the category of 4x points on catering is limited to American restaurants. It's quite restrictive, since the map is also likely to target a lot of people who travel a lot.
So, Amex is making an improvement in this regard. Starting June 6, 2019, the Amex Gold Card will offer 4x points in restaurants around the world.. This is a fantastic change that will make this card a lot more lucrative for those who travel a lot.
There are always two problems with this, however:
- Amex has virtually no worldwide acceptance of Mastercard or Visa for restaurants outside the United States.
- Amex had problems with properly coded restaurants, so many people ended up without winning bonus points on restaurants
Bottom line
the Amex Gold Card is already one of the best credit cards for meals, making it even more lucrative. I never really understood why Amex limited many of its bonus categories in the United States, as this did not really reflect the growing trend towards growing acceptance of credit card acceptance worldwide.
Personally, I always use the Citi Prestige for my shopping purchases because it offers 5x points worldwide, but this Amex bonus category is also very good.
If you have the Amex Gold card, are you excited about this change?
