Amid the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, UK chief veterinarian Christine Middlemiss tweeted a bird flu warning after the discovery of an H5N8 strain on a turkey farm in northern England.

Middlemiss tweeted: “Get ready! The risk of avian influenza from wild birds is increasing, so we are further increasing our biosecurity requirements. Be SCRUPULOUS in your efforts, please.

On Sunday, the UK government said the risk to public health was very low and bird flu did not pose a risk to food safety.

Middlemiss said in a statement to Reuters on Sunday: “Bird flu has been confirmed at a commercial turkey fattening farm near Northallerton, North Yorkshire.”

The 10,500 birds on the farm were to be slaughtered humanely to limit the spread of influenza.
