Florida MPs said an 11-year-old girl rescued her mother after being beaten over the weekend by stabbing her abuser in the back with scissors.

"Mom, I stabbed him because I thought he was going to kill you," said the affidavit on his arrest citing the girl. She has been described as "trembling".

The court documents released Tuesday by the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office indicate that the man in question was his uncle, Panagiotis Karamanlis, a 44-year-old Greek national who was illegally in the country.

The girl's mother is Karamanlis's sister.

The court documents said the girl had intervened Saturday in Palm Harbor while his mother was hit in the face, causing bruises.

Karamanlis has been charged with child abuse and domestic battery.

Online records showed that immigration and customs control services had taken Karamanlis into custody at Pinellas County Prison.

A public defender representing Karamanlis did not immediately respond to Fox News's request for comment.
