An airplane is truly self-standing for the first time

Researchers from the Technische Universität München have successfully tested a system using a combination of computer vision and GPS to land the plane. The technology uses GPS to navigate, but combines this with visible and infrared cameras to locate the track and get a clear idea of where it is, even when the fog or rain is obstructing visibility. From there, the aircraft can calculate a glide path and land on its own. Yes, many airliners can land automatically, but they do not really land autonomously: the airport guides them with a radio signal. This could help create true end-to-end autonomous flights in the future.
