According to new information, the reputed head of the Gambino criminal family in New York, shot in front of his home, tried to hide under his own SUV.

Police said Thursday they watched a surveillance video of 53-year-old Francesco "Franky Boy" Cali's attack shot dead Wednesday night in his red-brick colonial-style home in a quiet part of Staten Island. The gunman flees into a van, the police said. No immediate arrest has been made.

"What I think is that Mr. Cali has been hit repeatedly by shots. While trying to avoid other shots, he escaped to the back of his private vehicle and somebody probably thought that he was being crushed, but it's more than he was trying to get under the truck to avoid the shots, "Detective Chief Dermott Shea told reporters at a press conference, as reported on New York Times. York Post.

The gangster came out of his home around 9:15 pm after the gunman supported his truck in Cali's Cadillac SUV, having damaged it, police said. "With what we know at this point, it's quite possible that this is part of a plan," said Shea.

The video showed the attacker firing a 9mm handgun and firing at Cali about a minute after the start of their conversation, according to Shea. At least 12 shots were fired. After being hit several times, Cali tried to hide under his SUV to hide, said Shea.

Images seemed to show that Cali had been removed from his home after passing a van in the sport utility vehicle, forcing the registration plate to come off, said a responsible for the application of the law at the Daily Beast.

Aggressive federal prosecutions over the past 25 years have decimated the ranks of the five mafia families in New York. The cases resulted in long prison sentences for their leaders – including Cali's predecessor, Cali's predecessor of the 1980s – and encouraged their successors to remain discreet.

But, the new generation has still committed crimes at the old school – loans with lease, gambling, extortion – that can create enemies and shed blood.

Shea said that there had been a slight rise in alleged crowd-related violence in New York over the past year.

But, he said, it was too early to say if it had anything to do with the Cali massacre.

Federal prosecutors have referred to Cali in recent years as being the under-patron of the Gambino mafia family, one of the most powerful and feared criminal organizations in the country. Press accounts since 2015 have indicated that he had climbed to first place.

Gambino don "Big Paul" Castellano, murdered on the order of Gotti while he was coming out of a black limousine in front of an upscale steakhouse in Manhattan in 1985, was the last leader of the mafia to be removed from office in New York. Gotti then took control of the family.
