A 22-month-old purebred American Staffordshire terrier has disappeared at Atlanta International Airport.

An award-winning dog show disappeared at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Saturday night, when she was due to return home to Amsterdam.
Gale, a 22-month old purebred Staffordshire terrier, was scheduled to board a KLM flight to Europe when she broke loose from her crate. According to a Facebook article, airport staff would have left the dog alone in his crate when she escaped.

Floris van Essen, owner of Gale, said the dog was safe in his crate after passing the security. However, 10 minutes before boarding, officials at Gale handling told airport officials that they had lost it. It was not reported how the dog managed to escape from his crate or where was the crate when it came out.
Van Essen was told to board the flight while the airport staff continued his search for the dog.
"As you can imagine, it is only a horrible ordeal," said van Essen, returned to the Netherlands, to Alive in a message.

In a statement to Fox News, a spokesman for Hartsfield-Jackson Airport said Gale's search was "underway".

This is not the first time that a pet is lost at the airport. Last April, a cat escaped from his master's arms at JFK Airport in Queens, New York, and was found a week later.
More recently, in August, an emotional assistance dog also disappeared at JFK airport after LATAM Airlines failed to load it on the correct flight. According to reports, Labradoodle was allegedly taken home by a staff member of the airline after missing the flight. Once at the employee's house, the dog escaped and was not found.
