A 56-year-old man was found dead, stuck under a vehicle, Tuesday in Nevada, and officials say an earthquake might be to blame.

The man was last seen at a gas station on July 3 and was probably killed while he was working on his car the next day, in Nye County, Nevada, by the Sergeant Sheriff Adam Tippetts said in a video statement.

"This death could result from the fall of the vehicle on July 4, during the earthquake," Tippetts said in a statement.

The magnitude 6.4 earthquake rocked southern California and was felt in Nevada. An earthquake of magnitude 7.1 stronger that hit the same region the next day.

The man was not identified immediately, pending notification from the next of kin.

If the cause is confirmed, his death would be the first reported in the earthquakes near Ridgecrest, California on July 4 and 5.

It appeared that the vehicle had been lifted safely and that it was tool-based and that it was thought that he was working on the vehicle at the time of his fall, said Tippetts.

Experts said the magnitude 6.4 earthquake was the most powerful that hit southern California in two decades. Officials said no deaths or major injuries were reported in California during the two earthquakes.

Pahrump is a city of about 36,400 people located near the border between California and Nevada, about 160 km northeast of Ridgecrest.
