The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced Monday that 196 cases of E. coli infection related to ground beef had been reported in 10 states.

No one has died as a result of this epidemic. However, 28 people have been hospitalized and two cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome, a kind of kidney failure, have been reported, the CDC announced in a press release.

Last month, two companies made recalls due to possible contamination, the CDC said. Grant Park Packing recalled approximately 53,200 pounds of raw ground beef products, while K2D Foods "doing business as Colorado Premium Foods" recalled more than 113,000 pounds of raw ground beef products.

"At present, no supplier, distributor or brand of ground beef has been identified that could explain the entire epidemic," said the CDC.

Nineteen more cases have been reported since the CDC's last update on April 26, the agency said.
