The big storm is moving eastward, leaving at least 18 tornadoes and more than 300 damaging storm reports in two days in five states, while the east coast is preparing for extreme weather conditions.
Nine of these tornadoes, reported yesterday, occurred in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri, while parts of Arkansas were hit by half a foot of rain and sudden floods. A tornado watch in the area is in effect until 8 am Central Time.
Strong storms are likely today from Pennsylvania to Florida, with the toughest weather visiting Virginia and the Carolinas. Gusts of wind exceeding 100 km / h are possible, as well as tornadoes and flash floods.
Further north, the same system will release heavy rains from Virginia to Maine, which could reach more than 3 inches in some areas. Flood watches have been published in 11 states so far.
Washington, Philadelphia and New York could see significant rains and potential floods. Parts of Atlanta were without electricity around 6:30 am Eastern time.
