COURTLAND, Miss. – Someone has shot the former friend of a Mississippi woman who was burned, and investigators question a suspect, authorities said Friday.

Travis Sanford, 33, was killed Friday morning in a court house, said Panola County Sheriff Dennis Darby to news agencies. The prosecutor, John Champion, confirmed that he was Jessica Chambers' boyfriend when she was burned to death in Courtland in 2014. Sanford had been incarcerated at that time and had been acquitted of his sentence, said Darby.

The Sanford death suspect shot in Sanford's house around 7:30 am on Friday, Darby told Jackson's Clarion Ledger newspaper. Sanford's girlfriend and two young children were at home, he said.

Chambers died in a hospital on December 7, 2014, a day after being burned in a town of 500 residents north of Mississippi, about 65 kilometers south of Memphis, Tennessee. Two jurors are in stalemate over the conviction of another man, Quinton Tellis, at his death. Prosecutors said that mobile phone evidence showed Tellis and Chambers at similar locations, and they broadcast videotaped interviews during which Tellis changed his story several times when he was confronted with new evidence. . Tellis first denied seeing Chambers late in the day, but later confessed that he had been with her until about an hour before his death.

Defense counsel stated that the prosecution schedule was not plausible and provided testimony from 10 firefighters and emergency medical workers who said they heard members of the House say that "Eric" burned it down. The Mississippi authorities have not yet decided to try Tellis a third time.

He is currently incarcerated in the parish of Ouachita, Louisiana, where the prosecutor announced that a grand jury would consider the charges relating to the death of Ming-Chen Hsiao, a Taiwanese fatally stabbed at Monroe in 2015. Tellis pleaded guilty in 2016 for unauthorized use of his credit card. After serving his sentence for this crime, he was arrested for murder.
