An Indiana boy, 2 years old, crushed by a lawn mower and flown to hospital for "serious injuries," according to police

A toddler in Indiana suffered serious injuries Saturday, after his grandfather supported him with a lawn mower, officials said.

The Jennings County Sheriff's Office said on Facebook that the incident occurred around 1 pm on block 3600 of Grayford Road in Commiskey, located about 70 miles south of Indianapolis.

"MPs are investigating and describing until now a terrible accident," police said. "Our thoughts are with the family in this difficult time."

Police said William and Beverly Waltermire went to the sheriff's office in North Vernon to request an ambulance from their grandson.

A 2-year-old boy living in Indiana had to be flown to a hospital after suffering "serious injuries" when he was crushed by a lawn mower on Saturday.

While William was mowing the lawn on a property on Grayford Road, the 2-year-old ran to his grandfather, pursued by his grandmother, police said.

The boy then fell while the grandfather was backing up and went under the lawn mower while it was still working, the couple told the police.

The grandparents rushed to the sheriff's office, met emergency responders, and the grandson was rushed to St. Vincent Jennings Hospital in North Vernon.

The boy was then flown to Riley Hospital of Indianapolis for "serious injuries," according to police.

"We would like to thank the staff of Rescue 20 and St. Vincent-Jennings Hospital, as well as the officers of the North Vernon Police Department for their efforts," police said.

Additional incidents about the accident have yet to be published. The sheriff's office said MPs were still investigating.
