An NYPD officer accused of strangling Eric Garner was fired

The New York police officer accused of strangling Eric Garner in 2014 was fired and will not touch his NYPD pension, Commissioner James O'Neill announced on Monday.
"It is clear that Daniel Pantaleo can no longer serve effectively as a police officer in New York City," he said.
Constable Daniel Pantaleo was convicted earlier this month, in a disciplinary trial, of using a strangulation against Garner, the New York man whose last words, "I can not breathe," became a rallying cry for the Black Lives Matter movement.
The administrative judge of the Ministry officially recommended the dismissal of Pantaleo. O'Neill, an officer for 34 years, cited this recommendation repeatedly in his announcement Monday, but said the decision to end Pantaleo was still not easy.
The decision comes more than five years after the police attempted to arrest the father of six, aged 43, who allegedly sold loose cigarettes to Staten Island. In the video of the arrest, Pantaleo can be seen wrapping an arm around Garner 's shoulder and the other around his neck before spilling him and pulling him to the ground.
While Pantaleo forces Garner's head down the sidewalk, Garner can be heard: "I can not breathe, I can not breathe." He died shortly after.
