A Tennessee police officer is in critical condition and his alleged gunman died after gunshots broke out during a welfare check Saturday morning, officials said.

Sullivan County MPs were sent on 3606 Highway 11W after applying for a welfare check from Jackie Scott Pendergrass, 44, the Tennessee Investigation Bureau said in a statement.

Once at Pendergrass's residence, officials said he opened fire, firing at least one shot.

TBI said the deputies withdrew and tried to contact the suspect, but he reopened the fire. The officers fought back but Deputy Commissioner Steve Hinkle was hit during the exchange.

He was taken to a hospital, where officials say that he is in serious condition.

As the stalemate continued, Pendergrass barricaded himself at his home, where agents repeatedly tried to contact him.
