CINCINNATI, Ohio (WXIX) – A fourth-grade student from Mason City Schools died just one day after being diagnosed with strep and flu, school officials said.

Sand Gibson was diagnosed Tuesday morning, which, according to school officials, would have resulted in a cardiac arrest Tuesday afternoon.

School officials asked members of the community to wear the rose on Thursday to support Sable.

You can read a full letter from the district below regarding the death of the girl:

"Dear School Family of Mason Town,

Our Comet family is mourning tonight after hearing that one of our fourth grade students, Sable Gibson, has passed away tonight. Sable's family reports that her sweet daughter was diagnosed with tinea and flu on Tuesday morning, resulting in a heart attack Tuesday afternoon.

Our hearts are with the Gibson family in this very difficult time. We also raise all classmates, teachers and Sable support staff. We will have additional advisers at Western Row tomorrow.

Here are some suggestions on what parents can say to their children when they die. If you have any doubts about your child's reaction to this loss, please contact your child's teacher, school counselors or administrative staff.

Sand was a big friend with a big heart who loved the color pink. We invite everyone to show our love and support for Sable's family and friends by wearing the rose tomorrow.

Please, keep the Gibson family in your thoughts and prayers.

Regards,
Tracey Carson, Public Information Officer "
