An Ohio girl dies one day after strep throat and a flu diagnosis

A girl from Ohio died this week, just one day after being diagnosed with strep throat and flu, her mother said.

Sand Gibson, a grade four student at a Mason City school, was diagnosed with flu and streptococcus on Tuesday and morning, but a few hours later she went into cardiac arrest, her mother Holly Rauch Gibson said. a post on Facebook.

She was flown to the Cincinnati Children's Hospital but died the following night.

"It is with broken hearts that we share that our sweet Sand Paige took her first steps in the arms of Jesus tonight," reads Gibson's message. "Our hearts are completely broken."

Mason City Schools also released a statement Thursday confirming the death of Sable.

"Please, join us in keeping the Gibson family in our thoughts and our daily prayers as she navigates in these very difficult days."

Officials asked school members to wear pink in memory of Sable on Thursday, Cincinnati's FOX 19 report said.

Gibson thanked those who reached out to the family and shared a message of hope.
