COLUMBUS, Ohio – An Ohio man made history with a perfect March Madness breakthrough through 48 games in the NCAA.com Bracket Challenge, according to the NCAA.
Gregg Nigl of Columbus told the Columbus Dispatch that he had barely completed his hook last week, saying he was sick at home a few hours before the deadline. But he felt bad about not getting into a slice of his friend's group of tournaments.
Instead, he correctly predicted each game in the first two rounds of the NCAA 2019 tournament.
The NCAA's support follower said that support was the only perfect remaining among all the major online support games, including Yahoo, ESPN, CBS, Fox, Sports Illustrated and the NCAA contest. It's the longest series of correct bracket choices, beating the 39-game record set in 2017.
According to the NCAA, the odds of getting a perfect support are 1 in 9.2 quintillions – so, bettors, take the pennies.
Nigl, 40, said he had researched his choices and that he had done his homework after the unveiling of the tournament pitch, including watching some of the TV shows.
In addition to its historical parenthesis, two of the other three Nigl bands are in first place in their groups, the statement said.
Nigl watched the games closely, stopping on a recent trip with his wife to a brewery in Erie, Pennsylvania, to watch Michigan beat Florida in the round of 16. Nigl, who grew up in Michigan, is a long time Wolverines fan.
Nigl has in his perfect category Gonzaga No. 1 beating Kentucky No. 2 for the national title. Duke and Virginia complete his Final Four.
While Nigl likes the way he chose the remaining games, he does not rely on his support to stay perfect.
"Seeing the odds of a perfect support up to now, I'm not very sure it stays that way," said Nigl. "But anything can happen."
