An Oklahoma inmate dies and many people injured during prison fights while institutions throughout the state are still under surveillance

Oklahoma jails remain closed Monday after a series of inter-prisoner fights over the weekend in several state facilities have left one dead and over a dozen of injured, officials said.

Fighting began Saturday at the northeastern correctional center of Oklahoma in Vinita, the Oklahoma penitentiary department said Sunday. The outbreak of violence then continued on Sunday in five more prisons in Hominy, Sayre, Forty Supply, Lawton and Stringtown.

An inmate died at Dick Conner Penitentiary Center in Hominy, about 90 kilometers from Oklahoma City, the department said. More than a dozen other people throughout the state have been taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Details about the death, other injuries and what triggered the fighting were not immediately available.

Police however told Oklahoma News 4 Monday that an inmate from Lawton Penitentiary had been stabbed several times and needed an airlift at a hospital in Oklahoma City.

ODOC stated that they were transferring the detainees involved in the fighting to other institutions for security reasons and to enhance security in the six institutions where violence had occurred.

Spokesman Matt Elliott said officials were still investigating the causes of the fighting.
